5 Things to Consider When Moving to a New State
When you or your spouse is an active service member, moving is often a constant in your life. To be sure that your next move is the best choice for your family, here are 5 things to consider when moving to a new state.
5 Things to Consider When Moving to a New State
The Housing Market
The housing market varies from state to state and is important for you to understand before moving to a new state. Be sure to do your research to get a grasp on home prices in the area you’ll be moving to. Doing this research will help you narrow down your neighborhood choices based on which homes will set you up for success when you decide to sell in the future.
Cost of Living
Like the housing market, the cost of living also varies by state. Once you have an idea of where you want to live, research the prices of gas, groceries, utilities, parking, etc. Because these costs can vary greatly from state to state, you’ll be able to accurately budget for these costs before moving and can avoid sticker shock.
Culture
It’s important that the place you’re moving to offers the culture that you want for you and your family. If you don’t have kids and you’re moving to a suburb without much nightlife and local eateries, it may not be the best choice for you. On the flip side, if you’re a family of six and you’re looking to move to a noisy and busy city without many parks and hard to find parking, it may be wise to check in other areas as well. The last thing you want is to go through the hassle of packing up and moving only to find out you don’t love the area you live in.
Employment
Job markets and opportunities can vary between one city to another, so if you don’t already have a job lined up, spend some time on employment sites to see what positions are available. This research can help determine where you want to live as well as plan out your transportation to and from work.
Weather
You’d be surprised at how many families move solely based on weather. Not only can weather affect your mood, lifestyle and social plans, but it can also heavily impact your utility bills. Research average seasonal temperatures to get an idea of heating/AC bills, and if solar panels are useful in the area you’re moving to. If the bills are hundreds of dollars higher than you’re used to paying, it would be good to know early so you can budget.
