5 Ways to Make the Most of a Puget Sound Commute

We all know Puget Sound traffic is pretty bad, in fact it’s the 5th worst traffic in the nation. So while you’re in your car for 1-2 hours each morning driving to work, how are you spending your time? 1-2 hours a day is a large chunk of time, approximately a quarter of the time you spend at work, so what you do during this time will set the tone for the rest of the day. Here are 5 ways to make the most of a Puget Sound commute.

5 Tips for Surviving Your Puget Sound Home-to-Work Commute

Listen to the radio

The Puget Sound has multiple radio shows ranging from celebrity news, world news, and politics. So scan your radio and find a station that appeals to your taste in radio show. A lot of the radio shows these days have daily quizzes that interest listeners and test not only the players’ knowledge on random trivia, but also the listeners. Additionally, radio shows have interesting stories that suck listeners in and take their mind off of the traffic. Of course, radio stations also play music, so find the station that you can jam out to in the car, and practice singing that karaoke song you’ve been meaning to practice.

Make to-do list for the day

The morning commute is the best time to make a to-do list for the day. While you’re sitting in snail speed traffic, think about all the business goals you want to achieve by the end of the day and prioritize them in your mind. Once you have this list compiled, add in your personal to-do list for the day. Once you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, it’ll add a sense of urgency to your routine, and will result in higher productivity.

Listen to a podcast/book on tape

Exploring new podcasts/books on tape is a great way to learn while you are going to and from work. It’s a good way to distract your mind from the monotonous driving routine or a long carpool commute. If you are traveling in the near future or just want to learn a new language for the sake of learning a new language, visit your local library and see what Rosetta Stone discs they have available to check out. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn if you consistently practice for an hour or two everyday.

Set personal goals, and plans to achieve them

Working out, reading more literature, and spending more quality time with loved ones are all popular personal goals that business people desire. Since a lot of time is spent driving to work, at work, and driving home from work, you need to strategically plan how you’re going to assign the rest of your time. If working out is a personal goal of yours, create a plan of how often you will go to the gym and what part of your body you want to work out each day. If you want to work out outside of the gym, plan your walking or running route around your home and hold yourself accountable to stick to the plan.

Plan your meals

Standing in the store and thinking about all of your meals for the week can be overwhelming. You have to think about what you’ve recently had, what you’ve enjoyed in the past, what days you won’t be at home for a meal, what days you are having company, and so forth. So take some of the time on your commute to answer all of those questions. It will make your trip to the grocery store faster and more productive than if you were to go in with no plan. It will also help you branch out in your cooking so you can explore different meals.

Just like most things in life, focus on the things you can do about a situation, don’t dwell on the situation itself. So if you find yourself among the mass heard of cars stuck in traffic each morning, consider trying one or more of these 5 ways to make the most of a Puget Sound commute, and see how your trip turns from dreadful to enjoyable.
